It's Time India Gets Cashless Payment

India just had a mobile network revolution yesterday; thanks to Reliance Jio. It's time India gets another long-due technology i.e. mobile payment. There are many advantages of using mobile payment over cash or ATM cards. You are less likely to lose your phone - assuming you fiddle with your phone as much as I do. Even if you lose your phone, you can at least try to track it down using GPS. Your phone doesn't physically deteriorate over time. No need for mints. No wastage of paper. It's environment friendly. No maintenance needed unlike ATMs. More secure than ATM PIN codes. Mobile payment uses your fingerprints for verification. Mobile payment is much more convenient. Your employer transfers your salary to the bank and you can directly pay from your bank account. No need to withdraw the cash and hand it over to the merchant, who eventually does the reverse process after they received the money. Such waste of time. Instead just bring your phone or watch close to the...

Let's Take It to the Next Level

It's been a month since I joined Edifixio India as a Software Developer Trainee. It's been a great experience so far. I've been busy learning things I always wanted to learn. The last Friday as I was studying AngularJS, an idea struck me. It's something I wanted to do for years; study and understand how an Operating System works. For the last couple of months my friend Aniket has been training to become an embedded C programmer. As I was discussing embedded C with him, I saw an opportunity to learn. So I have decided that I would dig deep into the Linux kernel during the weekends. Let's see how things turn out. Maybe someday I'll become a kernel developer✌

Mi Band Review

This is my review for the Mi Band. I have been using this smartband for 2 months now and the results have been, well, disappointing. The band has a good built quality. The main unit is also built well. It's water proof. I took a bath wearing it. No issues whatsoever. TL; DR: Good hardware, quirky software The Mi Band is backed up by buggy software. Step tracking works well, but sleep tracking is poor, very poor. Sometimes it shows that I took steps while I was asleep. If you sleep more than once in a day, your sleep data gets deleted. You can increase your step count just by shaking your hand. The app has its own quirks. It's designed well, but in 2016, I had hoped for Material Design; at least for the Android version. Synchronising with Google Fit works intermittently. The app doesn't show granular data for days other than the current day. I even had issues trying to connect the band with the app. But not everything is that crappy. The battery life is incredible. Over...

Resources I Used to Learn Programming and about IT

The Internet is a great resource to learn anything. But sometimes it's hard to find the information you're looking for. So I have been thinking about writing a blog post, listing down the resources I used to learn the programming languages and about the IT field. So here it goes! Codecademy - Has tutorials on different programming languages and is beginner-friendly. Khan Academy - Has very good modules on HTML, CSS, JavaScript and more with a unique editing environment to get down and dirty. Code School - Has lots of courses covering languages used in different domains. Didn't seem that beginner-friendly to me. Udacity - Has videos covering different domains just like Code School. The videos are really polished. But that is to be expected as Udacity makes courses in collaboration with tech giants such as Google, AT&T etc. edX - Has courses from renowned universities around the world such as the MIT and Harvard; and from tech organization like The Linux Fo...

Java's File Name Constraint?

When I started learning Java, I learnt that it was required for the file containing the main class to be given the same name as that of the class itself. This not entirely true. One can name the file anything they want, as long as the public access modifier is not applied to it. The program will compile and run. I came to know about this when my friend +Aniket Mazumdar  told me about it. I didn't believe him at first. But after doing some research, it seems that he was right. Shout out to him!

Why Your First Workplace Should be a Startup

I always found it fascinating to be able to work at a startup company. To be working with the latest and greatest technologies with like minded folks seemed to be the best thing. I joined Iquester Solutions LLP on August 15 2015, two and a half months after I graduated. It turned out to be a great experience, exactly the way I thought it would. I learned a lot and I think everyone looking into a software development careers should join a startup in the beginning of their careers. Reason #1: Startups tend to use the latest and greatest technologies out there. They generally don't have software written using older technologies which they need to support. Reason #2: You get to work at your own time and place, even from home. Being a night owl, it was a big plus for me :D Reason #3: Startups generally have small number of employees. And this is a great learning opportunity. You get to code, you get to test your code, you get to be the support technician, you  get to be the pers...

Why Do We Still Pay for Voice Calls?

It's 2015. We have self-driving cars, mobile devices that rival laptops built 3 years ago, gigabit Internet connections and still, service providers make us pay for voice calling and SMS. That seems to be the dumbest thing to me. Let me explain... There are generally three things that you do on your phone, that needs to communicate with the network. First, there is voice calling, then there is SMS and lastly, there is web browsing and other stuff that requires an Internet connection. Now, put simply, Internet is all about sending data up and down, and if you think, SMS is also data. If we had a system, SMS can also be sent using the Internet. No I'm not talking about free SMS services here. Some of you might argue if we really need to have the SMS feature, but that's a different story. And then there is voice. VoIP anybody? That's been out there for ages! Why not route all the voice calls through the Internet? That's a question I'd like to ask the service ...
